Don’t let your skin take the hit. We spoke to our beauty expert, Shahnaz Husain and curated some precautionary measures, which will protect your skin from any potential damage.

Remember to apply sunscreen at least 20 minutes before going out in the sun. Use a sunscreen of SPF 20 and above.

The dry “Gulal” and the wet colours of today contain chemicals, shiny particles of mica and even lead, which irritate the skin and the scalp. They also make the skin and hair feel dry and rough. Since Holi is played outdoors, sun-exposure can have detrimental effects on the skin. Apart from harmful UV radiation, sun-exposure makes the skin dry by causing depletion of moisture.

How to do it right?

  • If your skin is very dry, first apply the sunscreen, wait for a few minutes and then apply a moisturiser.
  • Light daytime make-up may be used.
  • Touch up your eyes with an eye pencil or a kajal and use a lip-gloss to protect your lips.
  • Apply a protective leave-on conditioner or hair serum.

Remember to clean the area around the eyes. Use a cleansing gel to get rid of harsh colors.

Do not wash your face with soap immediately. This is because soap is alkaline in nature and can cause further dryness. Instead, use a cleansing cream, or lotion. Apply and massage it on the face. Then wipe it off with a moist cotton wool.

Make your own cleanser

  • Take half a cup of cold milk.
  • Add one teaspoon of any vegetable oil like “til,” olive or sunflower oil.
  • Mix well.
  • Dip cotton wool into this mixture and use it to cleanse the skin.

How to do it right?

  • Gently massage Sesame seed (til) oil on the skin to remove harsh colors.
  • Scrub the body gently with a loofah or a cloth.
  • Apply a moisturizer on the face and body, while the skin is still damp.

Remember that the after effects are worse so take precautions even after Holi is over.

The day after holi, you may have to deal with the effects of sun-exposure including dryness and tanned skin. Honey is a powerful natural moisturizer and helps to soften the skin, while curd is helpful in nourishing and restoring the normal acid-alkaline balance. It also helps removes tan.

Make your own Post Holi cleanser

  • Mix two tablespoons of honey with half a cup of curd.
  • Add a pinch of turmeric.
  • Apply this on the face, neck and arms.
  • Leave it on for 20 minutes and wash it off with water.

Remember that your hair quality would deteriorate if you don’t take your hair wash seriously.

How to do it right?

  • First rinse with plenty of water to wash away the dry colours and tiny particles of mica.
  • Apply mild herbal shampoo, working it into the hair with the fingers.
  • Massage the scalp gently and rinse thoroughly with water again.
  • Add lemon juice to a mug of water and use it as a last rinse.

Try adding beer to your hair wash

  • Add lemon juice to beer.
  • Pour over the hair after the shampoo. Leave it on for a few minutes and rinse off with plain water.
  • If there is itching, add two tablespoons vinegar to a mug of water and use it as a last rinse.

However, if the itching continues, and there are any rashes or redness, you should consult your doctor immediately.

Finally, pamper your hair after the festivities are over. Make sure you condition your hair with natural ingredients to restore the lost moisture.

Make your own egg based conditioner

  • Mix egg yolk with almond oil or olive oil and massage it lightly on your hair and scalp.
  • Then dip a towel in hot water, squeeze out the water and wrap the hot towel around the head like a turban.
  • Keep it on for 5 minutes.
  • Repeat the hot towel wrap for about 3 or 4 times.
  • Wash your hair after an hour.

You can also substitute your conditioner with Henna. Conditioning it with henna would help in restoring any damage to your hair and also add some shine.

Make your own Henna conditioner

  • Add four teaspoons each of lemon juice and coffee, two eggs, two teaspoons oil and enough curd to mix into a paste.
  • Apply the mix on your hair and then wash them after an hour.

Take these precautions; make sure your skin and hair are protected so that you can play Holi carefree and with utmost joy with your loved ones.
