Delhiites met with Vani Kapoor, India’s 22-year-old golf champion, who is all set to fly boundaries with her latest achievement as the Thailand’s golf ambassador.

How did golf happen to you?

I was destined to be associated with golf. It all started with me spending time with my father at the golf course during my school days. Slowly and steadily, I was told to learn this sport and I was against the idea of taking up something I don’t like or believe in. However, after coming to DLF and meeting my coach Aditya Chand, things started to change.

How hard was it to take up something you did not believed in?

I remember crying and howling to avoid gold practice because of all the physical strength it needs to brave difficult weather conditions. But my coach, Aditya Chand was a magician. He made everything simpler and interesting.

You started golf at which age?

I started playing golf at the age of ten.

What are the physical constraints involved in golf?

You need to be really fit to play golf because you swing a club so many times. All your power is going out at once. The more speed you have, the better shot it is.  There are so many calculations required to be done on field and your mind functions the best when you are physically fit.

Is there a certainly lifestyle that you have to follow for golf?

Sleeping on time is also important as you need to be fresh once you are up in the morning. It is all about a routine where you need to eat proper, sleep proper and rest at regular intervals to stay fit and alert.

Which is your favourite golf course?

As DLF is my home course, I love this the most and Kalhaar Golf Course in Ahmedabad also ranks high in my list.

Upcoming plans in the pipeline in terms of Thailand Tourism…

I will be visiting Thailand in August for the Queen’s birthday. I will be having a couple of other events about which I will be intimated as and when time comes.

Your to-do list for Thailand ready..

My schedule is extremely tight so I don’t think I will get much time. But, luckily, the first week of August is free for me. I am waiting to try the red and green Thai curries, the seafood and shopping and not to miss out on spa.

Future plans…

I want to do my masters in sports psychology. I am  also a certified coach for golf and it takes 6 years to finish this course. I am done with three years and I want to complete this in the coming time.
