Delhi’s very own and much awaited fashion event on the radar of fashion lovers around town, Amazon India Fashion Week 2017 took place at the Jawahar Lal Nehru Stadium from March 13-18th.

The FDCI event’s Day One opened with a show by ‘The Handloom School’ in an homage to the Indian textiles and handloom weaves. This was a showcase to acknowledge the work of the real hero’s, behind the beautiful Indian fabrics that we have come to find synonymous with most Indian Designers. The day ended on a high note as well, with a first of its kind curated fashion show by Vouge called the Saree 24/7 in association with the FDCI and sixty designers celebrating the saree in all its forms. Each designer showcased a creation that was their interpretation of the saree for the modern woman, giving the rest of us mere mortals some serious “desi girl” fashion goals going into the fall.

The rest of the week was a mix of both east, west and fusion styles, with creativity taking on a whole new meaning.

Shivan and Narresh showed off some edgy swimwear, skirts, jackets, lehengas and cocktail sarees with metallic touches and prints inspired by the European painter Eron Schilee’s art. Worth special mention were their featured lehenga’s in Velvetrene (a fabric that is textured like neoprene but looks like velvet) adding an unexpected modern twist to this very classic garment.

Pankaj and Nidhi was another standout show with a creative take on monochrome, abstract prints and fringes with their look called the ‘TELEFUNK’. Another trend watchers delight, Namrata Joshipura’s New York inspired collection was a pure fun interpretation of metallics, fringes and minimalist shimmer collection featuring an amalgamation of sporty and chic. Having the current diva Alia Bhatt, looking ravishing in a black jumpsuit as the show stopper was the cherry on this cake.

There were a lot more celebrity sighting on the runways with Vaani Kapoor for Rina Dhaka, Dino Morea for Sahil Aneja, Anushka Manchanda for Nought One by Abhishek Paatni, Richa Chadda for Rohit Kamra and wrestler Sangram Singh for Dhruv Vaish.

A special mention for Delhi’s very own Abhishek Paatni, whose label Nought One’s interpretation on modern street style with his collection “Warfare X Street wear” definitely caught our eye. This is one Gen Next designer you should be watching.

On the fusion front, breaking the stereotypical fall fashion mould we saw Nikasha take on ruffles (another trend of the season) but in flowy chintz with floral prints. Who says florals are only for spring- she’s made a believer out of us, that’s for sure.

At the first offsite show of its kind at the Indian Rail Museum in Delhi, Samant Chauhan a designer passionate about Indian textiles used Muga Silk from Assam this season in his collection. Strong structural pieces in cream with gold embroideries and hints of red kept in line with the current trend of metallic and monochromes.

Pèro by Aneeth Arora took to tribal inspiration with a twist and showcased cotton weaves and hand embroidered motifs on crop tops, midi skirts and culottes. Colourful pom-poms and tassels added a bohemian touch on their fall show at the National Crafts Museum.

Anju Modi’s show Neelambar showcased timeless lehenga cholis in mostly blue and white monochromes with architecture inspired metallic embellishments and patterns on organic, vintage, handwoven fabrics. Sakshi Tanwar as the show stopper in a regal cream and gold ensemble was a sight to behold.

The grand finale was a celebration of Indian weaves in a modern avataar with experimentations in drapes and styles. Couture Maestro Tarun Tahiliani and his protégé Amit Aggarwal came together for a captivating closing of the week. Monochromes with and eclectic mix of fusion drapes using fabrics and weaves like patan patolas and banarsi brocades created nothing short of a visual treat on the forest themed runway.

Fashionistas Trend Round Up- Essentially there is something for everyone, so no reason to be anything less than stylish upcoming season. We saw lots of metallics on their own and also interspersed with monochrome and prints, so looks like its “go Gold- or go home” in the fall!! All the Girly girls can revel in feminine ruffles and fall florals. Those not game for the über feminine style can play on the sporty chic street vibe. If easy going is more your style, then the free flowing tasseled crop tops and culottes let you stay true to your casual style.
