It was that fateful day of August 10th, 2016 when Sushant Rohilla, a 3rd year student of Amity Law School Delhi, committed suicide at his residence. All this started when Sushant was debarred from giving semester end exams on account of low attendance. What shook his world was the news of repeating a year due to detention on same grounds. Parents and the known of Sushant are blaming the college for ‘mental harassment’.
#JusticeForSushant
The mail addressed to Dr Ashok Chauhan, Director of ALS by Sushant clearly stated that Sushant had to skip classes due to a foot injury. Sushant’s mail pleading for mercy also stated that he will “not mentally survive this” which was recently released on Facebook by his Uncle. Being a student who was actively involved in college, it came as a major blow to him when the institution refused to help him out.
ALL ON GOOD NOTES: Keshav’s mail states that Sushant was an excellent student, “He was the President of the Debate Society; he successfully helped organised (sic) 3 editions of moot court competitions: he managed the souvenir committee and brought in lots of sponsors for the event; his team was the runners up in the 1st international RK Tanka memorial moot court competition, 2016 organised by NLIU Bhopal; he mentored a team of juniors who went on to win the USLLS Moot Court Competition; he helped organise the ALSD Symposium, 2015.” A few students have also vouched for the same.
WE WANT JUSTICE: Students in support of Sushant have stormed the social media with updates, supporting photos and posts asking for justice. Also, “ALSD Alumni Against Atrocities”, a Facebook page has been actively sharing these experiences since this incident took place. As students and alumni wanted to share similar unfortunate encounters, the page has referred them all to an alumnus of the Institute, Keshav Datta. The day this news broke out like fire, over 500 students staged a protest at the college main gate demanding immediate resignation of Dr BP Singh Sehgal and Dr Isheeta Rutabhsini.
REFUTING CHARGES: Amity Law School says decision to detain Sushant Rohilla taken by GGSIP University.
SHOCKING REVELATION; COLLEGE OFFICIALS FOUND AT FAULT: BUT, after investigation, a major revelation was made when Sushant’s name was to be found in the list of students eligible to give exams on the IP University’s website.
“His name appears in the IP university list, which means from their end he could give the exams. But his admit card was withheld in college by Professor Isheeta Rutabhasini, something that’s been done to many students in the past,” STATED BY A COLLEGE STUDENT.
“These two people hold all the power in college and take arbitrary decisions. They threaten students saying ‘tumhaari degrees humaare haath mein hain’ (your degrees are in our hands). There have been instances of them taking out their personal vengeance against students, harassing them over attendance,” SAID BY A STUDENT DURING PROTEST.
With the whole college and student association trying to get #JusticeForSushant, this movement is all about supporting fellow mates at the time of crisis. When your college becomes your enemy, a meritorious student like Sushant is bound to bear the brunt of this injustice. We want #JusticeForSushant.
