When you are away from home, the means to make yourself attractive are not easily available. So, you need a few tips, to limit your grooming needs when you travel and yet look attractive. Travelling light is an advantage, so you need items that are compact and portable. Get yourself a spacious shoulder bag and two small, plastic lined cases, for your toilet and make-up. Your beauty aids should be within easy reach, so that you can freshen up your make-up and look well groomed.
On a summer vacation by the sea or mountains, more skin care cosmetics and fewer make-up aids will be needed. Remember your sunscreen lotion. The effects of sun exposure are greater by the waterside, or near snow, because water and snow are reflective surfaces. In a tropical climate, or by the sea, avoid sun-exposure between noon and 3 p.m. Apply broad spectrum sunscreen when out in the sun, not only on the face, but on all exposed areas. The back of the neck and arms are extremely vulnerable to sun damage too. Apply the sunscreen 20 minutes before going out. If you are out in the sun for more than an hour, re-apply the sunscreen.
Use high SPF of 30 and above for sensitive skin.
You would also need a moisturiser, rehydrant cleanser, hand cream, lip balm. For oily skin and during the summer months, a scrub would help to brighten the skin and allow deep pore cleansing.
After swimming in the sea, rinse your face well with plain water. When you get back home or to your hotel room, dab face with cold milk and leave on for a few minutes. It helps to soothe sun burn. Then apply moisturiser. A peel off mask would be ideal to nourish and rejuvenate the skin. Or, mix honey with egg white and apply on the face. Wash off after 20 minutes. Honey is a natural moisturizer. This combination leaves the skin soft and glowing.
A cleanser is a must to remove all the dust and grime that have collected during the day. Select it according to skin type. Use a cleansing gel, containing aloe vera, which not only rehydrates the skin, but also restores the normal balance. For oily and combination skins, use a cleansing milk. A good skin toner is a must in hot weather, to refresh the skin. A rose-based skin tonic is ideal, as rose is a natural coolant. Green tea also makes a good skin toner. Soak a green tea bag in a little water. Cool the liquid and apply on the face. You can even keep it in the fridge and use it several times a day.

Night time cleansing is an absolute must. For dry skin, apply nourishing cream and massage it on the skin with a few drops of water. This helps the skin to hold moisture better.
In a cold and dry climate, the skin may be dry, more so if you spend time in the sun. For normal to dry skin, use a cleansing gel, containing aloe vera, which not only rehydrates the skin, but also restores the normal balance. For oily and combination skins, use a cleansing lotion or light cleansing milk. If there is excessive sun-exposure, or sun burn, just apply cold milk using cotton wool. It helps to soothe sun-damaged skin.
For your make-up, carry an eye-pencil, kaajal stick and lipsticks that are suitable for day wear. Perhaps, a lip gloss will do. You will also need pressed powder (compact) and powder blush-on. Remember to take a few tissues. For oily skin, or in hot and humid weather, pre-moistened tissues are what you need. Carry them in your handbag when you go out, to clean and refresh your skin. Apart from these, take deodorant and talcum powder.
Drink plenty of water during flights to maintain the water balance of your body. It also helps to keep the skin hydrated. You can have fruit juices, but avoid aerated drinks. Avoid alcohol and too much coffee during the flight, as these can also cause dehydration.
