The General Sparrow Cup, which is four-goal tournament, as is tradition, marked the commencement of the Delhi Spring Polo Season 2023. The competition began on February 14, 2023, with seven teams separated into two pools.
Delhiites Polo powered by Silver Arrows, spear headed by polo legend Angad Kalaan included a great line up of polo players like Gaurav Sahgal, Akshai Malik and Amar Singh. The players along with team patrons Deepak Sondhi & Sagar Sondhi made a stylish entry onto the field in the extremely elegant and powerful Mercedes EQB, EQS and GLB, provided by Silver Arrows.
On 19.02.2023, the finals of the General Sparrow Cup were held at the Jaipur Polo Grounds amidst the most distinguished of guests and spectators. There was a sense of excitement in the air as the Delhi Polo fraternity gathered together to witness the season’s kickoff!
Both the teams that reached the finals, Delhiites Polo as well the 61st Cavalry team, had made it after winning their league matches convincingly and with a huge margin, thus making them both serious contenders. The stage was set and an exhilarating match followed!
The Delhiites Polo team started its campaign in the General Sparrow Cup with a narrow win against the ASC, 8 goals to 7 followed by a landslide victory over the Navy team with 10 goals to 2.5 to make its way to the finals where they locked horns with the 61st cavalry.
The final match started with Delhiites Polo seeking to prove a point and going on the offense but the Cavalry came with its own gameplan and started countering the attacks until Gaurav Sehgal cut loose and started scoring goal upon goal.
Next in line was the veteran, Angad Kalaan who scored 2 goals while also fending off constant attacks from the Cavalry and Akshai Malik, who scored an impressive goal to help the team gain momentum. The match ended at the score of 6-2 ½ in the favour of Delhiites Polo. Angad Kalaan ended the tournament as the highest goal scorer with 13 goals in 3 matches!
