There has been a never ending debate raging over whether women can have it all or if they need to sacrifice one element of their life in order to be achieve success in another since the 90’s. These women, have finally put the debate to bed by living their lives large and creating their own identities, separate from their illustrious families and well known husbands.
Balancing work, families and the myriad of roles that every woman essays in her life, the Super Wives have all carved out a niche for themselves in their respective field and shown the world that they can hold their own.Q. Tell us about the beginning of The Perfect Match, where did you get idea to start it ?
I saw my mother matchmaking when I was growing up, and from a very young age I found myself fascinated by it. Then I inadvertently got two people married when I was 19. It was just an attempt to get two people together and now they have grown up kids, also at my own wedding, I set up two different couples who ended up getting married. Then for a long time I forgot that I had this affinity, until I got my sister married. My business partner from Overdressed had been observing this for a while, she also saw me match make during our Overdressed shows. She is the one who suggested starting a new business where we set people up, I was initially hesitant but she convinced me we could manage the time.Q. How has the lockdown affected your work?
The perfect Match is very new, so I had been focusing on completing the formalities and registering the company but work has really taken off since the lockdown because the Overdressed shows cannot take place right now so I have been working on making matches. It is a very niche business, we don’t have hundreds of profiles, just a handful of people that we are setting up at one time. I ensure that people take this very seriously and don’t waste anyone’s time. I believe this work will get us good karma and I ensure we take the utmost care, we carry out background checks and we have got astrologers on board to make the best matches possible.
Q. Did you always know you wanted to be your own boss? And what were some of the deciding factors for the same ?
My family inspired me, they have been extremely supportive and I wanted to do something where I get to make my own hours and devote that time to my husband and daughter. I make time for my daughter every single day when I pick her up from school and that is the most precious time for me. Everyone knows not to disturb me at that time. I have definitely compromised on sleep to make everything work and to make time for everything but it is worth it to me. My daughter being an only child, makes me even more committed to optimize every minute I spend with her.Q. Women who inspired you
I make my own rules and my own dreams but my mother and grandmother have had a huge impact on me, they did not work so they ensured I would follow my dreams and not compromise on work. My Nani is 80 years old and has never missed a show of mine. My mother in law has also been extremely encouraging of my work, being a working woman herself, she understands the problems I might face and she helps me manage my time. She has been working for 25 years and watching her has served as an inspiration to me. She really went against expectations to be working at that time when the public perception of working women was very different from how it is today.
Q. What are some of the Obstacles you have faced ?
I have had to sacrifice spending time with my friends and family, I also feel guilty because I do not get to spend as much time with my daughter as a stay at home mom would. I had to recalibrate and start finding more time for the people in my life a while back in order to feel more fulfilled and balanced.
