Fashion is not limited to the runway; getting ready (read: being fashionable) is a part of our daily ritual, and sometimes we do it more than once a day. Fashion is not about making a bold statement; it’s you telling everyone- on the streets, in the club, at work, at a grocery store, in the lift, at a cafe- who you are, without saying a word. As has been said time and again, fashion does not necessarily entail following latest trends; excuse the cheesiness, but it’s all about following your heart. You might obsess over it or you couldn’t care less about it- either way, you are doing it.
So, let’s dig a little deeper and find out what different fashion styles truly involve. To help us with that, we have on board five fashion bloggers from Delhi itself who have lovingly embraced who they are and express the same with great ease through the medium of fashion. Take a cue:
RETRO : THE TIME TRAVELER’S STYLE
KSHIPRA UNIYAL
Kshipra, a curiously creative soul who is forever ready to experiment and stand unique in terms of style, believes that fashion is cyclic in nature. What goes around comes around, only to present itself in a much improved form. Her 3 months old fashion blog, ‘Pop Of Citra’, is a reflection of her beliefs and an absolute blast from the past.
Going back in time to bring what’s worth laying eyes on defines Retro fashion’s spirit. The style has very few rules to follow. Thus, this style is for the people with creative hearts. The era of 60’s and 70’s greatly inspired the genre since it gave us some of the staple wardrobe pieces such as flared skirts, palazzos, straight cut dresses, and patterns like polka dots, chevron, etc. The prints and the patterns bring the required amount of jazz to an outfit getting one close to the roots of fashion. Retro clothing not only showcases the fun side of you, it is also a symbol of empowered femininity. As lively the trend is, it brings an amount of sophistication along with it.
According to Kshipra, a retro must-have collection should include Polka-dot shirts, Floppy hats, Midi-length skirts (A-shape, Flare and Pencil), Palazzos, Head bands, High waist denims, Oversize Shades. She says even half of these are good enough to fully bring out the charm of the Retro style.
BOHO : TAKE IT EASY BREEZY
PURNIMA BALI
There is a thin line between being abstract and being bohemian. And Purnima Bali’s style is pleasantly hula-hooping and moon-walking on that thin line. A creative advertising professional by day and a fashion blogger by noon, her style is a lot like her – never boring.
The bohemian look presents the gypsy glory with the finesse of modernity. Contrary to popular perception, Boho doesn’t necessarily mean chunky jewellery or too many accessories. It’s the legendary years of surrealism and beat generation weaved effortlessly into a bohemian soul. It is beautifully comfortable clothing layered nonchalantly to reflect the beautiful mess of a free-spirited person one really is. And Purnima’s look illustrates this perfectly, with the 60’s bright aztec print pants paired with a clean cut trench coat and biker boots that’ll walk all over you. She went easy on the accessories for this look, sticking to a big-dial watch and a leather wrist band, but there’s no such thing as ‘too much accessories’ in a bohemian’s wardrobe.
Bohemian style is supremely dynamic, easy to master and works well on almost all body types. After all, bohemian is not just a style, it’s a state of mind; a way of life, it is a trend that never goes out of fashion. That’s why we love it oh-so-boho-much.
OVER-THE-TOP : CAREFULLY COLOR-UNCOORDINATED
PARAM SAHIB
Ubermensch Lab, one of the pioneer mens’ fashion blogs in Delhi, is run by designer/stylist, Param Sahib. The blog is shaking the set norms and the pre-conceived notions about Menswear and brings a platter laid with multitudes of colours and array of designs served with an Over The Top personal style of Param sahib .
The style is interactive and obscenely colourful. It is all about blending textile, textures and material and making the clothing more tactile. When it comes to following any laid-out fashion rules, there are none. The only rule that this fashion trend follows blindly is to be yourself. Even if that entails looking extraterritorial or ‘too much’, don’t bring it down a notch. This Over The Top style can be easily replicated without burning a hole in one’s pocket. Having said that, it does require you to love attention, as this style definitely attracts a lot of it. For all the right reasons of course.
To sum it up for you- if you aren’t evoking and provoking reactions, you aren’t being Over The Top.
NORMCORE : BLAND WITH A BANG
SHREYA KALRA
For The Love of Fashion and Other Things is Shreya Kalra’s brainchild which started almost five years back. The blog has grown by leaps and bounds and from merely covering Shreya’s fashion whims and fancies, it now also talks about lifestyle, travel, books and everything else that she feels passionately about.
Her personal style is eclectic which ensures that she is playing around with different vibes almost everyday. The current style movement that she relates to is Normcore or simply put, clean basic cuts with an array of pastels and neutrals. Normcore developed as a result of people’s exhaustion with trying to stand out. It represents a personality that is laid back and fuss free and knows how to look effortlessly chic. It is a style statement that can work for every body type and that is probably one of it’s USPs. Throw on a boxy shirt with your denim joggers and you are rearing to go. The style may come across as simple or lazy but it is actually the opposite; it is the effort of dressing basic, yet fun that goes into it.
