The S-Class is often dubbed as the ‘Best Car in the world’ and rightly so given its correct blend of luxury, comfort, and refinement. The S-Class then is the benchmark luxury automobile and the car that others in its class look up-to. However what if you want something more from your S-Class and when merely ‘the best’ is not enough? Well, enter the Maybach sub-brand spin-off that takes the S-Class and dips it in even more sinful luxury.
The Mercedes-Maybach S650 is the best of the best and what Mercedes offers you when money is no object. Where do I start? I guess the stunning Matte grey paint would be the perfect place and you really need to see this car in the person as the presence that it exudes is unbelievable. It is longer than a standard S-Class and is dipped in chrome while the three-pointed star sits proudly at the bonnet of course.
However, if the exteriors impressed you the interior is taking luxury into the stratosphere. You get in and there is this wonderful amalgamation of wood, leather, tech and gleaming metal to cocoon you. The design is reminiscent of a yacht, especially with the art-deco detailing. The place to sit is at the rear of course, with a pair of massive seats which are having every gadget ever invented ensconced at their side. I will not mention all the gadgets and gizmos that adorn this car as instead I will merely list out my favorite ones. There is the ‘Magic Sky Control’ where you can control how the panoramic sunroof looks (i.e. tinted or transparent) while elsewhere there is an astonishing 26 speaker Burmester Audio system which is less car audio and more live recording studio. You also get massage seats (with a unique fragrance themed massage no less!) fold-out tables, rear entrainment system, the fanciest of technology ever made.
I could go on and on but instead let me take to straight to the driver’s seat as nestling under that bonnet is a beast of an engine. A 6 litre V12 petrol that develops a collosal 617 bhp and an equally astonishing 1000 Nm of torque. Those numbers make this massive luxury sedan one of the fastest cars on sale in India. To drive though, it is a unique experience. You do not hear anything inside as those double glazed windows do their bit very well while the 7-speed automatic gently swims over the large reserves of torque that this engine generates. There is also the magic carpet ride that its complicated suspension doles out but for me it’s the engine and its mischievous demeanor that endears with us the most. The performance is savage and also it handles despite its girth.
At near Rs 3cr, the Mercedes-Maybach S650 is an extravagance especially when compared to the price of a standard S-Class but it makes for an alluring concoction and elevates the S-Class to the heights it deserved to. Best car in the world? Well it’s now also the ultimate one.
